Cantonal tax deadlines: the complete calendar

All tax return filing deadlines canton by canton, including extension options, filing software and penalties for late submission.

How tax deadlines work in Switzerland

In Switzerland, the income and wealth tax return must be filed each year with the tax office of your municipality of domicile. However, there is no single national deadline: each canton sets its own filing date, with differences of up to two months.

Most cantons set the ordinary deadline between 15 March and 30 April of the year following the tax period. Nearly all offer the possibility to request an extension — often free if submitted on time — which can extend the deadline to September or beyond.

Knowing your canton's exact deadline is essential: failure to comply without an extension leads to paid reminders, additional costs and — in the most serious cases — an ex officio assessment with penalising estimates.

The cantonal deadline system

The Swiss tax system is unique internationally for its decentralised structure. Here are the key principles:

1

Cantonal autonomy

Each canton independently determines the filing deadline, extension procedures and associated late fees.

2

Tax period = calendar year

The tax period always corresponds to the calendar year (1 January – 31 December). The return for 2025, for example, must be filed in 2026.

3

Extensions on request

Almost all cantons allow at least one extension, often free of charge if requested electronically before the original deadline.

4

Digital filing

Each canton provides free software for online filing and submission. Some cantons already require electronic submission.

How to request an extension

An extension is the simplest way to avoid reminders and penalties if you cannot meet the deadline. Here is how it works in most cantons:

Online request (preferred channel)

Most cantons offer an online portal or a form within the cantonal tax software to request an extension in a few clicks. It is the fastest method and almost always free.

Written request

In some cantons (UR, OW, NW, SH) a written request — by post or email — to the municipal tax office is still required.

Timing

The extension must be requested before the ordinary deadline. Late requests may be refused or incur additional costs.

Extension duration

In most cantons, the first extension pushes the deadline to 30 September. Some cantons (AG, VD, NE, GE) grant a shorter initial extension (30 June).

Extensions for fiduciaries

Fiduciaries and tax advisors can generally request collective extensions for all their mandates, often with more generous deadlines (until end of November or beyond).

Practical tip: request the extension on the first available day, even if you think you will meet the deadline. It is free and protects you from unexpected delays.

Filing software by canton

Each canton provides free software for filing your tax return. Here is an overview grouped by linguistic region:

Penalties for late filing and omission

Failing to meet the deadline without requesting an extension leads to progressive consequences:

First reminder

A written reminder is sent with an administrative fee ranging from CHF 35 to CHF 100 depending on the canton. A new peremptory deadline is set (typically 30 days).

Second reminder

A further reminder with an increased fee (up to CHF 200 in some cantons). The tax office warns it will proceed with an ex officio assessment if the taxpayer fails to comply.

Ex officio assessment (Ermessenseinschätzung)

The tax office estimates income and wealth based on available data, generally applying an upward estimate. The taxpayer may object within 30 days, but the burden of proof is reversed.

Tax evasion fines

If the omission is deemed intentional, it constitutes tax evasion punishable with a fine of 1/3 to 3 times the evaded tax, in addition to recovery of the tax and default interest.

Practical tips to never miss a deadline

  • Mark your canton's deadline in your calendar on 1 January each year — it is the first thing to do
  • Request the extension immediately, even if you think you will make it on time: it is free and protects against the unexpected
  • Collect documents throughout the year (salary certificate, 3a, interest) — do not wait until March
  • If you are a fiduciary, use collective extensions and plan mandates by cantonal deadline order
  • Enable notifications from the cantonal portal: many cantons send automatic reminders by email or SMS
  • Keep the extension receipt confirmation: in case of dispute, the date of request is what counts
  • If you change canton during the year, the return must be filed in the canton of domicile as of 31 December
  • Use AccountEX to keep your accounting in order throughout the year: by the end of the period you will already have everything ready to quickly file your return
